EU warns US

The European Union warns that US President Donald Trump's rejection of a UN arms treaty would thwart global efforts to combat weapons trafficking. The EU foreign policy chief says the US move stands in the way of fighting the diversion of conventional weapons. Federica Mogherini says unregulated arms trade continues to fuel conflicts, terrorism and organized crime in many parts of the world. The EU’s chief diplomat says the bloc will continue to call on all states to immediately join the Arms Trade Treaty. On Friday, Trump said Washington would not abide by the 2013 treaty aimed at regulating the global arms trade.

US synagogue shooting

One person has been killed and three others have been injured following a shooting at a synagogue in the US state of California. San Diego police say they have detained a man in connection with the incident. The synagogue was holding a religious service when the shooting happened. The event comes six months after a gunman killed eleven people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh in the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States.

Sudan agreement

Sudan’s ruling military council and the opposition alliance have agreed in principle to form a transitional government after days of intense negotiations. The two sides agreed to establish a joint civilian-military council to lead transition to a civilian government in the country. An opposition leader said they are now discussing about what percentage of the council should be represented by civilians and the military. The agreement comes as protesters continue their sit-in outside the Defense Ministry in the capital Khartoum. Protests in Sudan started following a government decision to increase the price of bread. The demonstrations led to the military ouster of President Omar al-Bashir earlier this month. The transitional military council has taken over the leadership of the country since then.

Spain election

Spaniards head to the polls on Sunday in a divisive election that is expected to result in a fragmented parliament. The voting kicks off at 700 GMT and ends eleven hours later in mainland Spain. None of the parties is expected to win a majority. This will likely exacerbate the current political instability. The Socialist party of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is leading the polls. Also, the far-right is poised to get a sizable presence for the first time in decades. Final results are expected to be announced on Monday.

Sri Lanka commemoration

A Sri Lankan Roman Catholic leader has condemned the recent deadly attacks in the country. Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, said last week’s attacks were a great tragedy and an insult to humanity. He made the remarks at a private mass after all public services were canceled amid fears of a repeat of the attacks. A heavily-guarded vigil was also held outside Saint Anthony's Shrine in Colombo in remembrance of the victims. Almost a week ago, bombers struck three churches and several luxury hotels, killing at least 253 people, including worshipers. The government has blamed a Daesh-affiliated group for the attacks.
