US President Donald Trump said  "a lot of progress" was being made towards an accord with North Korea and welcomed support from Russian President Vladimir Putin, when speaking to the press in Washington, DC, on Friday.

"I think we're doing very well with North Korea. A lot of progress is being made. I appreciated President Putin's statement yesterday. He wants to see it done, also. I think there's a lot of excitement toward getting a deal done with North Korea," Trump said.

On Thursday, after meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Putin said  North Korea would need international security guarantees should he pursue the country's nuclear disarmament, noting that Russia supported Washington's call for full denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

Trump also denied that his administration had paid a reported $2 million (€1.79 million) medical bill in exchange for the release of comatose US student Otto Warmbier, noting that "no money was paid for Otto."

Asked by a journalist "how old was too old to be president," 72-year old Trump said he felt "so young" and "vibrant" and that he could beat his 76-year old Democratic rival Joe Biden "easily" in a possible presidential race.

"I just feel like a young man. I'm so young. I can't believe it. I'm the youngest person. I am a young, vibrant man. I look at Joe - I don't know about him," he added.
