A comedian wins Ukraine's elections: what's next?

Ukraine has just held its presidential elections. Current president Petro Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelensky battled it out for the presidency. But it was no contest. Zelensky, who has no political experience, won the elections, in a landslide nonetheless.

Poroshenko won outright victory in the May 2014 presidential election and has long supported the country's pro-European movement. He was a key backer of the 2004 Orange Revolution and once served as foreign minister. Forbes recently estimated his net worth to be $1.3bn after building up his confectionery empire following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. He now also has interests in construction and the media, owning influential Ukrainian broadcaster Channel 5 TV. He’s viewed by critics as part of the old establishment.
