Mueller report

The US Attorney General has released some of the main details about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russia’s alleged interference in the country’s 2016 presidential election. In his summary, William Barr says the report does not find evidence that any of President Donald Trump’s campaign officials knowingly conspired with Russia against his democratic rival, Hilary Clinton. Mueller’s 22-month probe also does not conclude that Trump obstructed justice, but it does not exonerate him either. Trump says the report fully exonerates him.

Yemen anti-Saudi rally

Yemeni people have gathered outside the United Nations’ office in the capital Sana’a to demand an immediate halt to Saudi Arabia’s war on their country. The rally comes as the kingdom’s aggression is about to enter its fifth year.

Iran floods

Aid and rescue operations are underway in Iran’s northern Mazandaran and Golestan provinces which have been hit by record flash floods. Iran’s First Vice-President Es'haq Jahangiri has also travelled to the affected areas to oversee the relief operations. Hundreds of aid workers have been dispatched to the areas. Members of the military have also been sent to towns and villages along with dozens of helicopters and boats. The Iranian government says all resources have been allocated to help the people in need. Local officials say they have restored electricity and water to most villages while makeshift camps have been set up to help the displaced people.

US Golan Heights move

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Ankara will take the issue of the Golan Heights to the United Nations. Erdogan said US President Donald Trump's statement on the occupied Golan Heights was a “gift” to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the general election in Israel. Addressing an Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting on Friday, Erdogan had also rejected any legitimization of Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights. Trump's said Thursday that it was time for Washington to fully recognize Israel’s annexation of the occupied Syrian territory. The move prompted widespread international condemnation, with many countries describing it as an apparent violation of UN resolutions.

New Zealand terror attacks

The New Zealand prime minister has ordered an independent judicial inquiry into the Christchurch terrorist attacks. Jacinda Arden said she wants to know how these acts of terrorism occurred and how they could have stopped them. She ruled out re-introducing the death penalty for accused gunman, Brenton Tarrant who has already been charged with murder. The royal commission is the most powerful judicial probe available under New Zealand law. On March 15, white-supremacist Tarrant opened fire on two mosques, killing at least 50 Muslim worshippers. The terror attacks were the worst ever peacetime mass killings in New Zealand.

Asia markets down

Asia-Pacific stocks have tumbled amid growing concerns over a gloomy outlook for the global economy in 2019. Japan's Nikkei took a nosedive with a loss of more than three percent on Monday. South Korea’s Kospi index shed one and a half percent while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng plunged over two percent. Also in Australia, shares dropped 1.3 percent. A looming US recession and a possible slowdown of the world economy have been stoking fears in investors. The Asia-Pacific decline follows a negative day for US stocks on Friday, with all three major indexes falling biggest one-day percentage losses this year.
