Iran Leader statement
The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says holding talks with the US will bear no fruit. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made the remark in a statement marking the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution. He said some of the challenges that Washington faces include Iran’s attempts to tackle the illegitimate US influence in West Asia, Tehran’s support for the Palestinian struggle against Israel, and Tehran's support for the Lebanese Hezbollah movement. The Leader noted that the Islamic Revolution guaranteed Iran’s security, stability, and territorial integrity. Ayatollah Khamenei also expressed gratitude to Iranian people for their high turnout in the rallies marking the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
Saudi war on Yemen
Eight Yemeni fishermen are killed in a Saudi airstrike. The casualties occured as Saudi jets targeted Yemeni boats off a local island near the city of Hudaydah. Thousands of Yemenis have died of illness or hunger since the beginning of the Saudi-led aggression on their country nearly four years ago.
Haiti scuffles
Haiti has become a battleground as clashes intensify between anti-government protesters and the police. So far, at least six people have died, and as the protests continue, violence shows no sign of abating
Japan-Iran ties
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has hailed his country’s ties with Iran as traditionally friendly. Abe made the comment as he met with visiting Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani in the capital Tokyo. Abe said Japan and Iran are marking the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. He said Tokyo is keen to further boost its cooperation with Tehran. Larijani is on a two-day visit to Japan. He has held talks with several officials including speaker of Japan’s House of Councilors, Chuichi Date. Iran is a major supplier of crude oil to Japan. The two countries have been struggling to keep mutual trade unharmed since the re-imposition of US sanctions on Iran last year.
Israel Gaza killings
Palestinians have held a funeral procession for a teenager who died four days after being wounded by Israeli soldiers. 17-year-old Hassan Nofel was hit by an Israeli tear gas canister during a protest rally in Gaza. Two other Palestinians were also killed and over a dozen wounded in the clashes. The demonstration was part of the weekly Great March of Return rallies that started last March. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank since then. The demonstrators have been calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland.
Iran frozen funds
The International Court of Justice has ruled that Iran can proceed with its bid to recover billions of dollars in frozen assets by the United States. The ICJ judges dismissed US objections to the case and said the UN body has jurisdiction to hear a claim by Iran to recover its frozen assets. Washington had said the assets valued at 2-billion dollars must go to victims of attacks it blames on Tehran. It also argued that the tribunal in The Hague did not have jurisdiction in the lawsuit. The court will hold further hearings to decide whether Iran can get back the money that was blocked by the US Supreme Court in 2016. Iran has said the US decision to freeze its funds was a breach of the Treaty of Amity with the United States. The agreement was signed before Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.
