The administration of US President Donald Trump is embroiled in “chaos and incompetence,” says the Democratic leader in US Senate in a rebuttal of the commander in chief’s upcoming State of the Union speech (SOTU).

“The president will say predictably that the state of our Union is strong, but the truth is the state of the Trump economy is failing America’s middle class,” New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said Monday. “The state of the Trump administration is embroiled in chaos and incompetence.”

The Senate minority leader further criticized Trump for his economic and foreign policies as well as incessant dismissals and resignations in his cabinet.

“What’s the state of the Trump administration? The state of the Trump administration is chaos,” Schumer noted. “The president makes these off the cuff decisions based on how someone looks and we all pay the price. ... Continuity and effectiveness of American government has been deeply compromised by the turmoil and turnover at the White House.”

During a pre-speech lunch with network news anchors last week, the US president claimed that he seeks unity in the deeply divided country.

"I want to see our country united," Trump said last week during a pre-speech lunch with network news anchors. "If I could unite the country, I would consider it a tremendous success."

Since campaigning for the 2016 presidential election, Trump has been accused of stoking racial, ethnic and religious tensions lurking within America.

“A looming question is just how many falsehoods, distortions and made up facts will appear in the president’s speech,” Schumer said.

During the Tuesday night address, Trump is also expected to call on Congress to compromise on a number of key issues such as immigration and trade.
