Iran's Foreign Ministry has condemned a “brutal and inhumane” attack on a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims in Iraq, saying terrorist groups intend to undermine ties between the two neighboring countries.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday that terrorist groups, which have been defeated in the Arab country are now committing such crimes to “undermine the bonds of unity that exist between the Iranian and Iraqi nations.”

"These terrorist groups will certainly fail to achieve their malicious goals and such crimes will only boost the two nations' determination to wipe out all remnants of terrorists,” the Iranian spokesperson pointed out.

At least nine Iranian pilgrims were wounded after their bus came under a terrorist attack in Iraq’s northern province of Salahuddin, according to Iraqi media.

The bus was targeted by gunmen on a road south of the town of Balad, some 50 kilometers north of Baghdad, on its way to a Shia shrine on Sunday.

The Daesh Takfiri terrorist group has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said in April that the Islamic Republic would keep up its counter-terrorism cooperation with Iraq until the annihilation of terrorism.

The Iranian defense chief added that Daesh had inflicted a lot of damage on the nations of the region, especially Iraq, stressing that all countries needed to put an all-out anti-terror fight high on their agenda or they would suffer.
