Washington warns Caracas
The US vice president says all options are on the table if power transition does not happen in Venezuela. Mike Pence added that the people of Venezuela have suffered under the heavy hand of oppression for too long. He said Nicolas Maduro is a dictator with no legitimate claim to power. Pence stressed that the time for dialog has ended and now it’s time for action. The US government recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s interim president. Russia, on the other hand, says it does not recognize Guaido as the leader of the Latin American nation. It also condemns any foreign interference in Venezuela.
US presidential policy
The US president says there is a good chance he will declare a national emergency for a wall along the Mexico border. Donald Trump once again slammed Democrats for refusing to give him the five-point-seven billion dollars that he has asked for the barrier. His latest comments came a day after speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said there is not going to be any wall money. Trump has threatened to circumvent Congress and declare a national emergency if lawmakers can’t agree on a border deal by a February 15 deadline. Under the US constitution, Congress holds the national purse strings and approves major expenditures of taxpayer money.
Israeli crimes in West Bank
Israeli forces have attacked Palestinian protesters in the occupied West Bank. The demonstrators condemned the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Clashes erupted in the West Bank village of al-Mughayer. Similar rallies were also held along the so-called buffer zone in Gaza. Over 50 demonstrators were injured as Israeli soldiers used live ammunition as well as tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the protesters.

Iran cruise missile
Iran has unveiled a cruise missile in a show of military might as the country is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution. Brigadier General Hatami said the missile has a range of one thousand three hundred and fifty kilometers and has been designed to hit ground targets. He said the surface-to-surface missile can be prepared to launch in a short time. The minister added that Hoveizeh cannot be detected by the enemy as it flies under the radar. Hatami further stressed that Iran will not negotiate its defense power with anyone.
UN questions Bahrain trials
The United Nations has expressed serious doubt over the fairness of the trials held for activists in Bahrain. The UN human rights office made the comment after Bahrain’s highest court upheld the life sentences of three opposition members. The leader and two senior members of the al-Wefaq opposition group were found guilty of spying for Qatar, a charge they deny. The al-Wefaq members were sentenced to life imprisonment in November, while they were acquitted in a previous trial. Bahrain has been conducting a massive crackdown on dissidents since 2011, when an uprising started against the Manama regime. Many prominent opposition figures have been jailed or left the country since then.
