Iraq reaction to Turkish violations

Iraq has summoned the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad over what it called repeated airspace violations in the country’s north. The Foreign Ministry described the violations as unacceptable on all levels. This after the Turkish military said it killed eight militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party in northern Iraq. Iraq says the airstrikes violate the country’s sovereignty and endanger the life of citizens. Turkey views PKK as a terrorist organization. It has regularly carried out air attacks against the PKK bases in northern Iraq with the aim of ending the militant group’s presence near the Turkish borders.

Hungary protests

Clashes have erupted between demonstrators and police outside Hungary's parliament building. This is the third night of protests in Budapest against the government's approval of amendments to labor laws. Trade unions and opponents criticized the legislation as a "slave law" benefiting employers. Opposition leaders voiced their disapproval of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party that passed the law. The government-backed proposal raises workers' allowable overtime from 250 to 400 hours a year and relaxes other labor rules in a bid to offset Hungary's growing labor shortage. According to police, more than 50 people were arrested and at least 14 officers were injured during this week's violence.

Yemen peace process

The United Nations’ special envoy for Yemen has expressed hope that a process to end the years-long crisis in the country could finally yield positive results. Martin Griffiths called for an immediate deployment of UN monitors in Yemen to observe the implementation of peace agreements. Griffiths also stressed that the warring sides’ peace deal is a humanitarian stopgap to save lives and establish peace in Yemen. Meanwhile, the Red Cross has distributed aid to the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah following a ceasefire between the Ansarullah movement and Yemen’s former government.

Khashoggi killing

Turkey’s president says people close to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were involved in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Rejep Tayyip Erdogan told the judicial conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation that audio recordings from the Saudi consulate in Istanbul show the connection. Erdogan also disputed Saudis’ claim that the murder was unplanned. He said the perpetrators carried out the instruction for Khashoggi’s murder professionally.

Israeli demolitions

Israeli forces have demolished another Palestinian house at a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The house belonged to Om Nasser Abu Humaid, the mother of six prisoners. Her other son has been killed by Israeli forces. Since 1967, the Israeli regime has been enforcing the draconian policy of demolishing the homes of the Palestinians it deems to be behind fatal attacks against Israeli settlers. The practice, however, was temporarily halted from 2005 to 2014 when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the resumption of demolitions.

France protests

France is bracing for a fifth consecutive weekend of violent protests as "yellow vest" demonstrators are expected to hit the streets nationwide. Authorities have deployed armored vehicles and thousands of security forces in the capital Paris, the epicenter of the yellow-vest movement. Embattled President Emanuel Macron has called for calm and order. Despite Macron’s tax and wage concessions, the movement's figureheads have urged protesters to turn out in numbers. They seek to pressure the government into making further concessions. Six people have been killed and hundreds injured since the start of the protests over fuel tax hikes on November 17. Last weekend’s demonstrations were the most violent with police using tear gas, water cannon and baton to disperse the protesters.
