Yemen talks

The second day of peace talks are underway between Yemen’s former government, backed by Saudi Arabia, and the Ansarullah movement in the Swedish capital Stockholm. Representatives of the ex-government have set conditions for reopening Sana’a airport. They have demanded that planes bound for the Yemeni capital be first inspected in the airports which are controlled by the former government. The UN has called on both sides to negotiate without preconditions to end Yemen’s conflict. On the first day of talks, the two delegations agreed to exchange thousands of prisoners.

France protests

The French interior minister says the Yellow Vest movement has created a monster by staging mass protests across the country. Christophe Castaner said he expected what he called troublemakers to turn out on Saturday. This as the country is stepping up security measures ahead of planned nationwide anti-government rallies. Authorities say some 89,000 police will be mobilized across the country with some 8,000 security forces and a dozen armored vehicles only in the capital Paris. Protesters are furious over rising cost of living which they blame on high taxes. Shops, schools and some other public venues are set to close over fears of clashes between police and the protesters.

Oil meeting

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has resumed talks to hammer out an agreement on production cuts. The negotiations are underway in Vienna, where participants are discussing several key issues. One of the topics is Iran’s demand for being exempted from planned cuts, because of US sanctions. Reports say Venezuela and Libya may also want to be exempted. The amount and timetable of cuts imposed by non-member Russia is another key issue. OPEC members are meeting amid a fall in global oil prices. They’re also due to meet with non-OPEC oil producers later on Friday.

US-Russia tensions

Russia believes the United States is seeking to wreck the New START nuclear weapons treaty by threatening to exit the INF agreement. Sergei Lavrov says the US has not yet presented any evidence to prove Russia violated the INF. The Kremlin has rejected a US call to dismantle Russia’s 9M729 nuclear-capable missiles. Russia says the projectile’s in compliance with the Cold War-era arms control pact. Washington has accused Moscow of breaching the INF agreement. It’s said it will pull out of the deal in two months.
