Khan al-Ahmar clashes

Palestinians have confronted Israeli forces deployed to Khan al-Ahmar Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian media say a large number of Israeli forces, accompanied by military bulldozers, were deployed to al-Ahmar village. Several Palestinians were wounded and a number of others were arrested. Palestinians also report that Israeli settlers unleashed wastewater into the village early on Monday. They say the settlers did so, to help the Israeli regime in its push to drive out residents of the village. Israel has been seeking to destroy Khan al-Ahmar village for a long time now. The village hosts Bedouin Palestinians and is located between Jericho and Jerusalem al-Quds.

Syria crossings reopen

The main border crossing between Syria and Jordan has been re-opened to normal traffic, three years after it was shut down by foreign-backed militant groups. Damascus and Amman agreed to re-open the Nassib Border Crossing, three months after the Syrian army took control of it. Officials from both sides stood nearby as the border gate opened at 0500 GMT Monday. The crossing, known as Jaber on the Jordanian side, is considered one of the most important land overpasses in the Middle East. Its closure in 2015 cut a crucial transit route for trucks transporting goods between Syria, Jordan, Turkey and other Persian Gulf countries. Meanwhile, a crossing linking Syria to the Israeli occupied Golan Heights has also been re-opened after four years. On Friday, the United Nations announced that Israel and Syria have agreed to re-open the Quneitra crossing to facilitate the work of UN peacekeepers.

No Brexit deal ‘inevitable’

Northern Ireland’s Democratic Union Party has rejected the prospect of an agreement between the UK and the European Union over Brexit. The Brexit spokesman for the DUP said given the EU’s behavior towards the UK, it is probably inevitable that Britain will leave the block without any agreement. Another DUP member said Brexit talks have turned into a battle for the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said a Brexit deal is possible with goodwill, but there are issues still unresolved. This comes after last-ditch talks between London and Brussels on Sunday failed to reach an agreement on trade rules for Northern Ireland.

Ready for Idlib battle

The Syrian Foreign Minister accuses the United States of supporting the Daesh terror group in Syria. Walid al-Muallem said the US is battling everything except the terrorists on Syrian soil. He made the comments during a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari. For his part, Jaafari said Iraq’s victory against Daesh was a victory for the entire world. Meanwhile, Muallem also stressed that the terrorist-controlled province of Idlib should return to Syria completely.

Saudi consulate search

A joint Turkish and Saudi team will search the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Monday as part of an investigation into the disappearance of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Turkey accepted a Saudi proposal last week to form a joint working group to probe Khashoggi's disappearance. Prince Khaled al-Faisal, an adviser to Saudi King Salman, has met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss the disappearance of the prominent journalist. Erdogan and Salman also spoke by telephone on Sunday, stressing the importance of forming a joint working group as part of the investigation. Meanwhile, the Saudi King has ordered the public prosecutor to open an internal probe into the case. Khashoggi went missing last week after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey.

France floods

Violent rainstorms and raging torrents in southwestern France killed at least 13 people. Flash floods swamped a number of towns and villages around the city of Carcassonne. The floods left a trail of overturned cars, damaged roads and collapsed homes. Around 1,000 people were evacuated in the affected area due to fears that a nearby dam could burst. 600 firemen helped with rescue operations. Authorities rushed in helicopters including Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and the French interior ministry. They said three months of rainfall poured in just a few hours. Last week, similar floods in Portugal and Spain left several residents dead and tens of others injured.
