Tension in US-Palestinian ties

The Palestinian leadership says it’s considering retaliatory measures against the Trump administration’s recent actions including cutting funds to aid agencies which provide Palestinians with assistance. This is while the UN has warned of a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Saudi war on Yemen

Saudi Arabia launches fresh airstrikes in Yemen, causing more deaths and destruction. The latest attacks targeted residential areas in Hudaydah province. At least 15 people were killed and 20 others sustained injuries. Meanwhile, Yemen’s army said its forces have repelled Saudi Arabia’s ground offensive in the northern parts of Hudaydah province. Hudaydah is the entry point for the bulk of Yemen's commercial and aid supplies. The attacks on the province come amid UN warnings that they put civilian lives at risk. Riyadh invaded its southern neighbor in March 2015. The war has so far claimed the lives of nearly 15,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians.

South Sudan peace deal

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar have signed a peace deal on the sidelines of a regional summit in Ethiopia. The two said they need to do all they can to secure peace for the people of South Sudan. The country plunged into a civil war two years after gaining independence from Sudan in 2011. The conflict broke out after President Kiir accused his deputy Machar of plotting a coup. South Sudan’s civil war has killed thousands of people.

Palestinian village demolition

A large contingent of Israeli forces has surrounded a Palestinian Bedouin village in the occupied territories slated for demolition by Tel Aviv. Regime troops are razing to the ground several shacks at the entrance of Khan al-Ahmar east of Jerusalem al-Quds. Activists had built these several days ago in protest at the planned demolition. NGOs say Tel Aviv has declared the village a closed military zone. Israeli forces accompanied by at least seven bulldozers made their way to the area before sunrise. Tel Aviv says the village, home to 180 residents, was built without the required permits. The Israeli demolition will pave the way for the construction of yet another Israeli settlement. Palestinians say these settlements will cut off East Jerusalem Al-Quds from the occupied West Bank.

US gun violence

Amnesty international has released a new report on gun violence in the United States, warning that it has become a human rights crisis. The rights organization says an average of 106 people died per day from firearm-related incidents in 2016. It also says that 116,000 people also suffered from non-fatal firearm injuries that year. The report notes that survivors of gun violence often struggle with mental, physical, emotional, familial and financial consequences of their injuries as well. It adds that the toll of gun violence is a public health crisis of astonishing proportion, with remarkably little government response. Amnesty stresses that all aspects of American life are compromised due to lack of proper gun regulations.

Hurricane Florence

A dangerous hurricane called Florence is nearing the US East Coast, threatening to cause devastation and flooding. The storm has been downgraded to category 2 from category 4 with sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour. However, US officials say Florence is still a very dangerous hurricane and could dump up to 80 centimeters of rain. It is expected to hit North Carolina late Thursday and then drift southwest along the shoreline. Authorities have issued emergency declarations for five states. An estimated 25 million people are in the storm’s projected path and 1.7 million are under mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders. Florence is being trailed in the Atlantic by two other storms, Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Isaac.

Russia military might

The third day of Russia’s large-scale military drills is underway in the country’s far-east. These are the biggest drills in Russia’s modern history. Some 300,000 troops are mobilized in the war games which are being conducted close to China’s border. The maneuvers also involve an unprecedented number of Chinese forces together with the Mongolians. Russian President Vladimir Putin was present at the site of the war games. He said the Russian government advocates peace, noting that the country’s army must be ready to defend the country’s sovereignty and security, and also to support its allies if necessary. Moscow’s display of military might comes at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and NATO. The Western military alliance has said it would closely monitor the games.

Trade war blowback

A survey shows American companies in China are being hurt by tariffs in the growing trade war between Washington and Beijing. The study says the negative impact of China’s tariffs on US companies has been “clear and far-reaching”. That has prompted the American business lobbies behind the poll to urge the administration of President Donald Trump to reconsider its approach. Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve warns that American businesses have scaled back or postponed investments due to concerns about international trade tensions. The Federal Reserve says Trump’s tariffs on imports from other countries have boosted input prices, particularly among manufacturers. Washington has reportedly proposed a fresh round of trade talks with China before the White House imposes more tariffs on Chinese imports.
