US warns EU over Iran

American officials have warned Europe over its outreach to Iran, saying the approach is poisoning the relations between the European Union and Washington. Top State Department Official Brian Hook says Brussels and Washington should be working together to counter Iran. Hook says Europe’s recent aid package to Iran sends the wrong message at the wrong time. He says the package stands in the way of meaningful policy changes in Iran. Also, a congressional official, speaking on condition of anonymity, says Europe has deliberately chosen Iran over the US for financial gains. Meanwhile, France and Germany have announced they are working on financing solutions to sidestep the anti-Iran US sanctions.

US-Mexico NAFTA deal

The United States and Mexico agree to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA. The overhaul includes provisions on auto trade, tougher worker rights, and a provision to review the deal every six years. The agreement was made without the presence of Canada that is the third signatory to the deal. Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland is due to travel to Washington on Tuesday to hold talks on the new terms. Her spokesman has said Ottawa would only sign a document that is in the interest of Canadians. US President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with additional trade tariffs if it does not join the new agreement.

Clashes erupt in Germany protest

Police have clashed with protesters in Germany as far-right supporters and counter-demonstrators held rival rallies in the eastern city of Kemnits. Fireworks and projectiles were thrown from both camps resulting in some injuries. Civilians were also attacked and harassed after the rallies turned chaotic. Several protesters were arrested by the police. It was the second night of protests over the fatal stabbing of a German man. A Syrian and an Iraqi suspect have been arrested in connection with the killing. The two are held in detention on charges of manslaughter. Police said the stabbing occurred following a fight at a city festival.

Iran president in parliament

Iran’s president has appeared before the parliament to answer questions about his administration’s handling of the economy. Hassan Rouhani partly blamed the US for economic challenges facing the country. President Rouhani assured the M-Ps that his administration will foil plots hatched by what he called anti-Iranian officials in the White House. Rouhani also defended his administration’s striking of the Iran nuclear deal, saying the accord showed the world the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. He noted that overcoming economic issues requires concerted efforts from the government, the judiciary, and the parliament. The president called tackling high unemployment one of the achievements of his government. Rouhani described attending the parliamentary session as a clear sign of democracy in Iran. He has been under mounting pressure over the past couple of months amid rising prices of basic goods and depreciation of the national currency. Two of his cabinet ministers have recently been impeached by the parliament and removed from office.

Plight of Yemeni patients

Cancer patients in Yemen complain about lack of medicine, imposed by the ongoing Saudi war on their country. Doctors say lack of medical supplies, such as beds, make it difficult for patients to receive treatment. The World Health Organization says an estimated 35,000 people have cancer in Yemen. It also says 11,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, most of them children. Yemen’s health sector is hit hard in the Saudi war, with medical centers among main targets of daily airstrikes. Yemen is also running short of medical supplies. That’s due to the Saudi blockade which has restricted imports of basic supplies to Yemen. An economy, weakened by the war, has also added to the sufferings of the Yemeni people.

Gaza sit-in

Families of Palestinian prisoners in Gaza have held a sit-in in solidarity with their loved ones and thousands of others in Israeli jails. The sit-in was held at the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Press TV’s correspondent in Gaza Ashraf Shannon was there and brings us the details.

Argentina rally against police brutality

Hundreds of people have protested in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, to condemn what they called police brutality during anti-government rallies of recent months. The families and friends of the shooting victims marched to the main square of the city, disrupting the traffic. They accused the police of employing a trigger-happy policy against protesters.
