London car crash

In London, a car has crashed into a barrier outside the United Kingdom’s Parliament, leaving several pedestrians injured. Armed police are at the scene in Westminster. London’s Metropolitan Police say the male driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene. Police say they are treating the incident as a terrorist attack. Westminster was the scene of a terror attack in April 2017, when a car plowed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before colliding with the railings outside Parliament. The driver exited the vehicle and killed a police officer using a knife, before being shot dead by armed police.

Turkey retaliation

The Turkish president says Ankara will boycott all American-made electronic products in retaliation to Washington’s recent punitive measures. Rejep Tayyip Erdogan says all US electronic goods will be replaced with products from other countries. Relations between Ankara and the Washington have fallen to their worst in the past few months over the fate of an American pastor, jailed in Turkey. The US took a series of measures against Ankara that resulted in the Turkish Lira’s decline to an all-time low against the US dollar. Turkey slammed the move, saying Washington risks losing a strategic NATO ally because of one man.

China anger

China has expressed strong dissatisfaction about the new US Defense law for 2019 over what Beijing describes as negative content related to China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the US included the anti-China content despite strong objections by Beijing. The ministry says implementing the anti-China clauses of the law will harm mutual cooperation. It says the US should abandon its Cold War thinking. The act gives additional powers to the Committee on Foreign Investment that reviews proposals in terms of whether they threaten US national security. The move comes amid a simmering tariffs war that has seen the US and China slap reciprocal duties on 50-billion dollars worth of imports from the other.

Italy bridge collapse

A motorway bridge has collapsed in the Italian northwestern city of Genoa, leaving casualties. The Italian deputy transport minister says nearly two dozen people have lost their lives. Officials expect the deal toll to rise. A rescue mission is underway as reports suggest cars and trucks are trapped among a huge chunk of rubble. Officials suspect structural weakness as the cause of the collapse. The bridge was built in the 1960s. Restructuring work was carried out in 2016.

Call for condemnation

Britain’s opposition Labour leader has called for unequivocal condemnation of Israel for killing over 160 Palestinian protesters in Gaza since March. Jeremy Corbyn condemned the recent law in Israel that recognizes it as a Jewish state, saying the law discriminates against Palestinians. Corbyn made the comments after a twitter attack against him by Israeli Premier, Benjamin Netanyahu. It came after media reports about the British politician’s presence at a 2014 memorial for Palestinians assassinated by Israel, as well as his comparison of Israeli occupation of the West Bank to Nazi rule in Europe. Netanyahu accused Corbyn of supporting terrorists, an accusation Corbyn rejected as false.

Taliban offensive

The Taliban have overrun a military base in northern Afghanistan after two days of fighting. The militant group killed at least 14 soldiers in their assault on the army base in Faryab province. Local officials say 100 soldiers were on the base at the time of the attack and their fate is not known. They are feared to have been captured by the Taliban. The militants also seized tanks and ammunition in their offensive that began on Sunday. The attack in the north coincides with clashes in the southeastern city of Ghazni.

Saudi Yemen war

Reports out of Yemen indicate that over a dozen people have been killed as the Saudi-led coalition launches an offensive on the Western port of Hudaydah. According to Yemen’s Health Ministry, at least 13 civilians including women and children are among the victims of the air and sea attacks on al-Durayhimi district. Nearly two dozen people are also injured. Yemeni officials say Saudi warships and warplanes prevent rescue forces and the Red Cross medical teams from reaching the al-Durayhimi district, south of hudaydah. The new massacre comes barely five days after dozens of people were killed in a coalition strike on a market in the northern city of Sa’ada. Two-thirds of the dead were Yemeni kids on a trip to their summer school.
