Iran nuclear deal
The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran has warned that Tehran will give a crushing response to anyone violating the 2015 nuclear agreement. Ali Akbar Salehi said enemies should know that Iran can go back to conditions prior to the conclusion of the landmark accord with the P5+1 group of countries. He said, however, that Iran does not want such a scenario to occur. Salehi said Iran will change its stance only if the US pulls out of the agreement and Europe and other major powers fail to do anything. The remarks come ahead of a May 12 deadline for President Donald Trump to decide on whether to extend waivers on sanctions against Iran, a US commitment under the agreement. Trump has threatened to pull out of the accord unless Washington’s European allies fix what he described as the deal’s flaws.
Puigdemont freed on bail
A German court has agreed to release on bail Catalonia’s ousted President Carles Puigdemont, following his arrest in Germany last month. The court also refused a request from Spain to extradite Puigdemont. It said his extradition to Spain was possible on the basis of corruption charges, but not on the charge of rebellion. The German court set bail at 75,000 Euros. The ex-Catalan president was arrested by German police on March 25 as he was travelling from Finland back to Belgium. He has been living in Belgium in self-imposed exile since Catalonia’s failed independence bid last October. Meanwhile, a judge of the Spanish National Court has charged the former police chief of Catalonia with sedition over his alleged role in the region's independence push.
France strike
Anti-government sentiments in France have reached levels unprecedented in recent years. Rail workers have embarked on a strike campaign which is planned to last three months, while multiple other sectors are also striking against labor reforms proposed by President Emmanuel Macron. Press TV correspondent Ramin Mazaheri has more from Paris.
Yemen retaliatory attacks
Yemeni fighters have started to target Saudi Arabia's infrastructure and industrial sites in retaliation for Riyadh’s ongoing war against its southern neighbor. The missile attacks, including the late Wednesday strike on Aramco Company's storage facility have been welcomed by the Yemeni public who have been bearing the brunt of the Saudi onslaught over the past three years. Press TV correspondent Mohamed al-Attab reports from Sana’a.
Israel Gaza killings
The United Nations Secretary-General has urged Israel to exercise "extreme caution" to avoid casualties on the eve of expected protests in Gaza. Antonio Guterres said Palestinian civilians must be able to exercise their right to demonstrate peacefully. UN chief’s comment comes as thousands of Palestinians are expected on Friday to hold anti-Israeli protests. Last Friday Israeli troops shot and killed 19 Palestinian protesters. This year, the March of Return coincided with the 42nd anniversary of Land Day, which commemorates the murder of six Palestinians by Israeli forces in 1976.
US-China trade row
The US president has announced he instructed American trade officials to consider one-hundred billion dollars in additional tariffs on China, once again heightening tensions with Beijing. Donald Trump said the new tariffs were being considered "in light of China's unfair retaliation" against earlier US trade actions that included 50 billion dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods. The US president’s comment came after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Washington is mistaken by choosing Beijing as its trade sanction target. The top diplomat condemned the move by the US administration to slap tariffs on a list of Chinese goods. China has also requested "consultations" with Washington concerning the proposed tariffs. Beijing warned that an economic war with the United States was pending.
South Korea court ruling
Former South Korean president, Park Geun-hye, has been found guilty of bribery, coercion, and abuse of power. A South Korean court announced the verdict, ruling that the former president colluded with her old friend to receive massive sums of money from major conglomerates, including Samsung. Park is given a 24-year prison sentence. The disgraced former president has denied any wrongdoing, refusing to take part in the court session that brought 18 charges against her. The verdicts for the remaining charges are set to be announced soon. Meanwhile, Park supporters have gathered in front of the court house to proclaim her innocence.
Gaza anti-Israel rallies
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip continue their anti-occupation rallies amid global outrage over Israel’s killing of Palestinian protesters. Reports say Israeli troops have opened fire on protesters near a refugee camp in Northern Gaza. There has been no report of casualties as of yet. Meanwhile, a Palestinian man, shot by Israeli forces on the Gaza border a week ago, has succumbed to his wounds. This brings to 20 the number of Palestinians killed during Land Day rallies which have been held since last Friday. Hundreds more have also been injured by Israeli force. Tel Aviv has been condemned after its troops opened fire on Palestinian demonstrators during last Friday rallies.
US race protests
In the US city of New York, people have staged a demonstration, demanding justice for an unarmed black man who was shot and killed by the police. The protesters gathered at a site in Brooklyn where Saheed Vassell was shot ten times by the officers. They called on the authorities to bring those responsible to justice. The demonstrators believe the U-S police target people of color deliberately.
