US-China trade war

China has imposed tariffs on 128 items of products imported from the United States. According to the Chinese Ministry of Finance, Beijing imposed a tariff of 15 percent on 120 items, including fruits and related products, and a tariff of 25 percent on eight other products. Beijing says the action was a countermeasure in response to a US move to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from China. The US measure which went into effect on March 23 severely undermines China's interests. Beijing says Washington’s measure violates World Trade Organization rules.

US says no to DACA deal

The US president says there will not be a deal on legalizing the status of young adult immigrants known as Dreamers. Donald Trump said the US-Mexico border is becoming more dangerous because of what he called ridiculous Democrat laws. Ahead of his statements, Trump had twitted no more DACA deal. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, also known as DACA, is the program implemented in 2012 under former President Barack Obama. Last year, Trump sought to upend the program, which was designed to shield individuals who were brought to the US as children by parents who were undocumented immigrants. DACA protects Dreamers from deportation and gives them work permits. Trump had said he was open to brokering a deal with congressional Democrats who wanted to protect the program in exchange for funding to build a border wall with Mexico. The wall was Trump’s frequent campaign trail promise.

Eastern Ghouta evacuation

Over a thousand militants and their families in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta are evacuating the city of Douma under a deal reached with the government. The Syrian army busses will take the Failaq al-Rahman militants to the northern Idlib province. The group was in control of some areas in the city. Douma is the only city in Eastern Ghouta still held by anti-Syria groups. The Syrian army began its operation in February in a bid to push out armed groups in the Damascus countryside. Since then, government forces have managed to recapture almost the entire region.

Crackdown on Palestinians

Israeli forces attack Palestinian protesters in the Besieged Gaza Strip for the third consecutive day. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, scores of Palestinians have been wounded after regime troops opened fire and used tear gas on them. The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Since Friday, Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza have been holding protests to mark Land Day. Israeli troops have attacked the demonstrations, killing 16 people and wounding more than one thousand others. The deaths have sparked regional and international outrage.

New Air France strike

Air France gears up for a new wave of strikes over the airline’s long-running pay dispute with its staff. The new walkouts are planned for April 10 and 11. They come in addition to plans to strike on Tuesday and Saturday, along with workers of the French rail operator SNCF. The fresh walkouts were called by three pilot unions after the management’s refusal to consider higher wages in recent talks. Unions representing flight attendants and ground personnel later joined in. Air France is set to bring in a 0.6 percent pay rise from April 1 and another 0.4 percent from October 1. It also plans bonuses and promotions equivalent to a 1.4 percent raise for ground staff. But the personnel in Europe's second-biggest airline are demanding a six percent salary increase.

Kashmir violence

Kashmir is observing an all-out shutdown in response to the killings of seventeen people in Sunday’s gun battle and demonstrations. The shutdown follows a statement by Kashmir's Joint Resistance Movement, calling on people to observe April first as a black day in the region’s history of subjugation under Indian rule. The Kashmir Economic Alliance has also expressed support for the strike action. At least thirteen pro-independence fighters were killed in a fresh wave of violence in the disputed region on Sunday. Later on the same day, four demonstrators were killed after Indian soldiers opened fire on thousands of demonstrators who were voicing their anger against the killings. The people of Kashmir have long been protesting the crackdown by New Delhi. India and Pakistan control parts of Kashmir, but both claim the disputed territory in its entirety.

Sacramento protest

A fresh protest has been held in the United States over the death of an unarmed African-American by security forces. Police claim that the slain man was a threat. An autopsy report, however, suggests otherwise. The incident is the latest in a series of police killings targeting unarmed black men in the country.
