Iranian freestyle wrestlers rank 2nd in 2018 Asian Championships

The national Iranian freestyle wrestling team has finished as the overall vice champion of the 2018 Asian Wrestling Championships in Kyrgyzstan.

The Uzbek wrestling squad collected 178 points and was named the top-ranked outfit at the conclusion of the continental sporting event in Kozhomkul Sports Palace of the Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek on Sunday.

Iranian freestyle wrestlers claimed the second place with 157 points, while third-place Kazakhs got 146 points.

Olympic and World champion Hassan Yazdani Charati overwhelmed Mongolian representative Orgodolyn Üitümen 10-0, and snatched a gold medal for Iran in the final bout of the 86-kilogram weight category.

Mohammad Javad Ebrahimi also stood on the top podium in the 92-kilogram class after he prevailed over his Kazakh opponent Adilet Davlumbayev 5-2 in the final showdown.

Mostafa Hosseinkhani and Amin Taheri also claimed two bronze medals in the 74-kilogram and 125-kilogram weight classes.

On Saturday and the fifth day of the tournament, Ezzatollah Abbas Akbari Zarinkolaei downed his Uzbek rival Rashid Kurbanov 5-0 in the final bout of the 79-kilogram weight category, and received the gold medal.

Furthermore, Mojtaba Mohammadshafie Goleij lost 3-5 to Uzbekistan’s
Magomed Idrisovitch Ibragimov in the 97-kilogram weight division, and collected the silver medal.

The 2018 Asian Wrestling Championships started on February 27, and finished on March 4, 2018. 

The tournament attracted dozens of male and female Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers from various Asian countries, namely China, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
