EU-US trade row

Reactions are pouring in after US President Donald Trump announced that his country would slap import tariffs on steel and aluminum. European Commission Chief Jean-Claude Juncker says the European Union will react firmly and commensurately to defend its interests. Juncker says the Commission will put forth a proposal for countermeasures in the coming days. Canada's Trade Minister has rejected the tariffs as unacceptable, saying Ottawa will respond to defend its steels industry. Also, the German Steel Association says the decision violates the rules of the World Trade Organization. On Thursday, Trump announced he would sign measures designed to protect US producers, raising the possibility of a trade war with China and Europe. Following the announcement, the US stock market plummeted, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average registering a 1.7 percent decline.

US condemns Russia

The United States has reacted to Russia’s new generation of invincible hypersonic weapons and submarines, accusing Moscow of openly breaching Cold War-era treaties. Nauert also denounced Putin's presentation and his cheesy animated video of warheads over US soil. She accused Moscow of violating the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty by developing ground-launched cruise missiles. Meanwhile, the Pentagon responded to Russia’s show of prowess, insisting that the US military was "fully prepared" to react to anything that came its way. The remarks came after the Russian president unveiled nuclear unmanned underwater vehicles and a new missile system not owned by any other country.

Terrorists in Syria’s Ghouta

Terrorists in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta continue to prevent civilians from leaving the region for government-held areas near the capital Damascus. Our correspondent Mohamad Ali has visited the humanitarian corridor there and filed the report.

UN slammed for Yemen war

The director of Human Rights for Yemen says the United Nations has been an utter and abject failure in the war-torn country. Kim Sharif also slammed the world body for imposing sanctions on a country that she said is facing the worst man-made humanitarian catastrophe. Sharif described the measure as utterly shameful which almost amounts to Nazi collaboration. She also railed against the US and the UK for sending arms to Saudi Arabia while it has been waging war on its southern neighbor.

Inter-Korean ties

South Korea plans to send a special envoy to the North in response to an invitation from leader Kim Jong-un. According to a statement released by the Blue House, the measure has been coordinated with the US administration. The statement clearly cited that Seoul was going to foster North-South dialog in order to encourage denuclearization in the peninsula. Earlier, Washington exercised pressure on Pyongyang through building up naval forces in the region and staging maneuvers to instill fear in North Korea. However, the tactic proved to be useless as Pyongyang advanced its nuclear and missile programs in response.

Turkey Syria fatalities

Ankara says eight Turkish soldiers have lost their lives in the ongoing cross-border offensive in Syria’s northwestern region of Afrin. In a statement, the Turkish military has confirmed that 13 other soldiers were also wounded. The latest casualties bring to 41 the Turkish military death toll in the Kurdish-held enclave. Meanwhile, Turkish airstrikes in Afrin have killed at least 20 civilians. On January 20, Ankara launched an offensive on the region to eliminate the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, also known as the YPG. Turkey views the Kurdish group as an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party which has been fighting for an autonomous region inside Turkey since 1984. The Syrian government has condemned the aggression and deployed troops to help the Kurds fight the Turkish forces.

Kabul bomb attack

Another terrorist attack in Afghanistan; a powerful explosion has ripped through the capital, Kabul, leaving casualties. Afghan officials say a bomber blew himself up near a convoy of foreign troops, killing at least one person and injuring six others. The blast occurred in an area close to foreign embassies. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack as of yet. The incident came two days after President Ashraf Ghani proposed to hold talks with the Taliban. In recent months, the Afghan capital has been hit by many terrorist attacks claimed by the Taliban and Daesh.
