South Korea police nabs Canada athlete for stealing car

Police in South Korea have charged a Canadian athlete taking part in the Winter Olympics Games with stealing a car.

The yet-unidentified athlete, his wife, and manager had gotten into an unlocked vehicle that had been left unoccupied with the engine running in PyeongChang, according to a Saturday statement by a police official in charge of international crime at South Korea’s Gangwon Provincial Police Agency.

The official said that during the early Saturday morning incident, the manager drove off with the vehicle before being halted by police officers, who then charged the Canadian manager with drunk driving.

Canada’s Olympic Committee CEO Chris Overholt confirmed at a press conference on Saturday that they were aware of the situation, though he refused to release the identities of the three individuals involved in the incident.

“We can confirm that an incident occurred involving the police around midnight Friday or early morning Saturday,” Overholt said.

“We have confirmation that individuals attached to our team are involved in the investigation and are cooperating,” he added. “However, until we know the results of the investigation we’re not really in a position to comment further.”

The South Korean police official further said the results of an investigation into the incident would be forwarded to the prosecution upon completion.

He said that unless the alleged offence is judged to be a serious crime, the three Canadian offenders would be able to leave the country after paying legal fines.
