Islamic Revolution anniversary

Iranians are holding nationwide rallies to mark the 39th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution. Millions of people from all walks of life have taken to the streets to commemorate the end of the monarchical rule of the US-backed Pahlavi regime on February 11, 1979. In the capital Tehran, people hit the streets from early morning hours to descend on the iconic Azadi Square, where President Hassan Rouhani addressed the nation. The nationwide rallies are the manifestation of the Iranian people’s allegiance to the causes of the revolution and the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini. Most Iranian cities and towns are thronged with people, marking the historic occasion.

Iran stance

President Hassan Rouhani has warned other signatories to the Iran nuclear deal, namely the US, against withdrawing from the agreement. The president made the comment while addressing demonstrators marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Tehran. President Rouhani said the US has tried, on numerous occasions, to scuttle the Iran nuclear deal, but to no avail. Elsewhere in his remarks, the president touched upon Iran’s gains in fighting terror in the region, saying Tehran has helped force terrorists out of Iraq and Syria. President Rouhani underlined that a political solution coupled with collective cooperation is needed to settle the problems in the region.

Saudi war on Yemen

More death and destruction in war-torn Yemen, as Saudi warplanes carry out fresh airstrikes in the country’s Hudaydah province. In two separate attacks, nine civilians from one family, including 5 women, were killed when the Saudis targeted their homes in al-Sharjah area of Jerahi directorate. Saudi Arabia launched a brutal war on its southern neighbor in March 2015. The aggression has killed nearly 14,000 Yeminis, most of them women and children. The United Nations condemned Saudi Arabia's “absurd bombardments” in a statement last December.

Russia plane crash

All the people aboard an ill-fated Russian flight are feared dead as the passenger plane crashes outside the capital Moscow. The Antonov An-148 came down shortly after takeoff from Moscow's Domodedovo Airport. It was operated by the domestic Saratov Airlines and was headed to the city of Orsk. There were 65 passengers and 6 crew members aboard the plane.

‘Anti-terror’ drive

The Egyptian army says at least 16 militants have been killed during its military operations in the Sinai Peninsula. This came on the heels of attacks by Egyptian warplanes on militant gatherings and hideouts in Sinai. The strikes reportedly targeted weapons warehouses and logistics support areas. Egyptian ground forces and police also conducted raids inside Sinai cities to seize militants. Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has been the scene of an insurgency that has killed hundreds of people since 2013. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ordered the military to end the insurgency within three months after a brutal attack on a mosque left over 300 people dead last November.

US deadly shooting

Five people, including a male suspect, are dead in a shooting spree at two nearby locations in the US state of Kentucky. Police found the bodies of two victims at a home in Johnson County, in the northeast, after receiving a call about a shooting. While officers were searching for the suspect, a second call led deputies to an apartment in Paintsville near the first place. They found three people fatally shot, including the gunman who had apparently took his own life. The identities of the victims were not released. Police said deputies are investigating the shooting. The incident came three weeks after the state was rocked by a high school shooting. Two students were killed and 18 others wounded by a fellow student in that shooting.
