Sri Lanka marks independence day, president stresses economic development

Sri Lanka marks independence day

Sri Lanka marked the 70th anniversary of independence from British rule on Sunday, February 4, with a flag-raising ceremony and a colourful parade in capital Colombo.

President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized the need for economic growth and strengthening education in his address. Sirisena, in the fourth year of his five-year term, is facing a series of economic issues. High external debt payments has increased pressure on the rupee and increased the cost of living, sparking widespread criticism of the government. Responding to a series of corruption scandals and slow moving investigations of alleged corruption by ministers of the previous government, the President called on politicians to end corrupt practices.
