Afghanistan reeling from violence

The aftermath of Saturday’s deadly attack on Kabul’s intercontinental hotel which left a number of people dead. The attack was the second major siege on the hotel since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. The previous attack took place in 2011. The latest incident claimed by Taliban is yet another grim reminder of the fact that the afghan war is lost for the West as it has happened over 16 years into the occupation of Afghanistan. In spite of all this, the U.S. is readying plans to increase its total force in Afghanistan by as many as 1,000 troops this spring beyond the 14,000 already in the country.  The Obama administration, as part of its plan to end the Afghanistan war in 2015, limited advisers to higher headquarters far from the fighting. President Donald Trump has pushed for advisory teams to reach the battalion level, far closer to the front lines.

KRG PM visits Iran

There are growing signs that Iraq is putting behind a row triggered by a recent secession referendum in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. Kurdistan’s Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has begun a diplomatic campaign to put things right. He sat down for talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Heidar al-Abbadi last week. The Iraqi premier renewed Baghdad’s conditions for lifting restrictions on the northern region after the illegal vote. Abadi also demanded that the northern region stop selling oil without the central government’s consent. Baghdad said the talks were held in “an atmosphere of trust”.  Kurdistan’s Prime Minister then traveled to neighboring Iran and met with top officials there.
