Police in Kosovo have offered an eye-catching sum of prize for any information that could help uncover the assassination of a leading Serb politician.

Police said in a statement Tuesday that anyone coming forward with clues about who murdered Oliver Ivanovic would be rewarded with €10,000.

An email address and phone numbers were provided in the statement with police saying that authorities would guarantee the security of people who wanted to help with the investigation.

Ivanovic was shot dead earlier on Tuesday as he was arriving in his party headquarters in the Serb-dominated northern part of the city of Mitrovica.

Police said a probe had been launched into the incident and that investigators were assessing the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Local media said unknown gunmen opened fire on Ivanovic. He was rushed to a hospital but doctors were unable to save him, said the reports. The attackers escaped in a car which was later found burned.

The 64-year-old was a relatively moderate politician who had for years backed dialogue with Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians while supporting Kosovo’s drive for gaining full independence from Serbia. A court convicted him of war crimes during the 1998-99 war but then the ruling was overturned earlier last year and he was slated to face a retrial.

Ivanovic’s death is expected to raise ethnic tensions in the Balkans. Sources said talks between Kosovo, a former province of Serbia that declared independence in 2008, and the Serbian government, which has yet to recognize the independence, was suspended after the news broke of Ivanovic’s assassination.

The Serbian government said it wanted its representatives included in an international investigation into the case.
