Iran rallies

Iranians have turned out onto the streets in thousands for the fourth day in a row to reaffirm their support for the government. In Saturday’s rallies, the demonstrators chanted slogans in support of Iran’s Islamic establishment. They also condemned any acts of sedition and violence. Demonstrators have, in recent days, rallied across the nation to denounce the violence that erupted in several cities over the past few days. The capital Tehran, Kerman, Sari and Semnan are among the cities where pro-government demonstrators decried the recent unrest and warned against any plot to trigger sedition in the country.

North Korea likely to attend Winter Games

North Korea says it’s likely to participate in next month’s Winter Games in South Korea despite tensions between the two neighbors. Pyongyang’s representative to the International Olympic Committee made the revelation at Beijing’s International Airport. That’s a day after the two countries agreed to hold rare talks next week. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un also said in his New Year speech that his country would consider sending a delegation to the upcoming Olympics and he wished them success. The event will be held from February 9 to 25. Relations between the two Koreas strained further, over Pyongyang’s missile tests and Seoul’s joint war games with Washington on the Korean Peninsula.

‘Fire Fury’ against Trump

The US president’s position in the White House seems to be in real jeopardy following the publication of a new book about Donald Trump's fitness for the oval office. Michael Wolff, who is the author of ‘Fire and Fury’, says his revelations will put an end to the US president’s tenure. The book sheds light on concerns among top White House aides over Trump’s psychological fitness for presidency. This is not the first time the US president’s mental health comes under question. Last year, a group of psychologists warned against Trump’s increasingly threatening behavior and his verbal aggressiveness. The psychologists said Trump is suffering from malignant narcissism. The US Secretary of State, however, has defended Trump. Rex Tillerson claims the US is in a stronger place internationally thanks to Trump's policies.

Saudi Arabia arrests

Saudi Arabia has reportedly detained nearly a dozen more princes amid an alleged anti-corruption crackdown in the kingdom. Local media say the princes were arrested outside the Royal Palace in Riyadh while they were protesting against a decision to cut off their privileges. The arrests are the latest in a long-running purge in the country. Saudi authorities put behind bars dozens of royal figures, ministers and businessmen last year. The Saudi regime claims the move is aimed at eliminating corruption. But critics say Riyadh seeks to bolster the power of Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.

Yemen’s situation looks like apocalypse: UN

The United Nations has warned that Yemen could become the world’s worst humanitarian disaster in half a century. Speaking to a Qatari media, the UN Humanitarian chief said the situation in the Arab country looks like the apocalypse. Mark Lowcock said the cholera outbreak is probably the worst the world has ever seen, with a million suspected cases until the end of 2017. Lowcock also expressed concern over the new epidemic of diphtheria which has killed scores of people and affected up to 500 others over the past few weeks. The UN official noted that the epidemic will spread like wildfire across the country. Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed a blockade on Yemen since the start of their deadly war campaign in March 2015. Aid agencies have repeatedly said that the Saudi war and its blockade have been depriving large Yemeni areas of food, fuel and medicine.
