Daesh car bomb attack in Syria

A Daesh car bombing has killed dozens at a refugee gathering in the eastern Syrian province of Dayr al-Zawr.

The attack targeted people who had gathered on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River. Dozens more were wounded. The attack comes as Syrian forces and their allies are advancing against Daesh fighters in the border town of Abu Kamal. On Friday, Syrian government forces along with allied army units took full control of Dayr al-Zawr which was the last Syrian city where Daesh still had a presence.

Yemen missile attack

Yemen’s Ansarullah forces have fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh international airport in the Saudi capital.

The sound of an explosion has been heard from inside the airport. Saudi Arabia claims the missile was intercepted. However, Ansarullah forces say the projectile hit the target. The Yemeni army has also confirmed the missile launch.

The Saudi purge

Saudi Arabia’s anti-corruption board has arrested eleven princes as well as dozens of former and four current ministers hours after it was created.

The committee, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was formed by a royal decree. Also in the same decree, Mohammad al-Tuwaijri took over as the new economy minister. Prince Miteb, son of the late King Abdullah, was replaced as minister of the National Guard by Prince Khaled Ayyaf. Before his ouster, Prince Miteb was one of the few remaining senior princes to have survived a series of cabinet reshuffles that promoted allies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. King Salman has sidelined other senior members of the royal family to prevent any opposition to the crown prince.

Hariri resignation

A senior Hezbollah official has accused Saudi Arabia of targeting Lebanon’s stability after Prime Minister Sa'ad al-Hariri announced his resignation during a visit to the kingdom.

Deputy Chief of Hezbollah’s executive council, Sheikh Nabil Qaouk said Riyadh was seeking to change Lebanon’s role in the axis of resistance. He stressed that Saudi Arabia wanted Lebanon to normalize ties with Israel and join its coalition in attacking Yemen, Syria and Bahrain. The senior official noted that Riyadh’s latest policy was doomed to fail. Earlier, Sa'ad Hariri announced his surprise resignation, saying he had sensed his life was in danger.

Arba’een march

Millions of Shia Muslims are taking part in one of the largest peaceful gatherings on the planet: the Arba’een march between the two holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq. Participants from over 60 countries have been granted visas to attend the multi-million-man march.

Trump is expected to hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe later Sunday with North Korea top on the agenda. In Tokyo, an anti-Trump rally has been held with demonstrators condemning his policies. This is Trump's first Asian tour which will also take him to South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. North Korea is expected to dominate talks between Trump and Asian leaders during the tour. Trump said he might also meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of an economic forum in Vietnam next week.
