Marathon runners take wrong turn and lose race

Marathon runners

Venice Marathon favorites Abdulahl Dawud, Gilbert Kipleting Chumba, Kipkemei Mutai and David Kiprono Metto lost around 2 minutes during the race on Sunday (22rd October), in a bizarre incident in which the leading 6 runners took a wrong turn.

The leading pack had followed a motorcycle off the course after 25-kilometres (16 miles), covering several hundred meters before being made aware of their error and turning back.

With the main competition 2 minutes behind pace, Italian Eyob Faniel stepped up to win the Venice Marathon and became the first Italian to win the race in 22 years.
