Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny has been released after completing a brief period in detention.
Navalny had been detained by police in late September and sentenced to 20 days in jail for repeated violations of the law on public meetings and rallies.
After release, Navalny said on social media that he again planned to attend a political meeting in the provincial town of Astrakhan, in southern Russia, where he also planned to deliver a speech, later on Sunday.
Navalny hopes to run for president in 2018 even though Russia’s central election commission has declared him ineligible to run due to a suspended prison sentence. He was convicted for fraud in 2014 and has a suspended jail sentence in a separate case, as well.
Navalny claims the court actions against him were politically-motivated.
Meanwhile, the contender with the highest chances in the upcoming election is incumbent Vladimir Putin. But President Putin has declined to say whether he would run for what would be his fourth term in the Kremlin.
Another candidate is Russian TV personality Ksenia Sobchak, who announced her unlikely bid fore presidency earlier this week.
The presidential election in Russia is due in March 2018.
