Rohingya plight

Former UN chief, Kofi Annan has called on the Security Council to push for the return of hundreds of thousands of Rohyinga Muslims to Myanmar. Annan, who led an advisory commission to the Myanmar government, made the comments after addressing the UN Security Council in a private meeting. He said the international community has started piling up pressure on Myanmar’s military to rein in its operations against the minority population. Annan said the council members must work with Myanmar’s military and civilian leaders to end the refugee crisis. The military stepped up its deadly crackdown on Rohingya Muslims in August. Since then, hundreds of thousands of them have fled to neighboring Bangladesh as the army continues burning villages to the ground.

Syria army gains

Syrian forces have totally liberated the eastern city of al-Mayadin from Daesh terrorists. Government troops and allied had encircled Daesh terrorists, holed up in the city for several days. The latest gain comes as the Syrian forces are pushing ahead with their offensive on several other fronts in Dayr al-Zawr province. The flashpoint city of Mayadin was one of the last strongholds of Daesh in Syria. The Syrian army reached Dayr al-Zawr in September and pushed down the Euphrates River toward Mayadin after a month-long offensive.

US deadly drones

At least 14 people have been killed in a fresh US drone strike in eastern Afghanistan. The attack was reportedly carried out in Kunar province. According to an Afghan lawmaker, all the victims were civilians. However, a local official claims the strike targeted a meeting of Daesh commanders planning for a terrorist attack. There was no immediate comment from the US-led forces in Afghanistan. The US claims its drones target terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda and Daesh, but according to local officials and witnesses, civilians have been the victims of the attacks in many cases.

Trump sued

Eighteen US states have sued President Donald Trump’s administration to prevent it from eliminating subsidies from the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The New York attorney general described Trump’s move as cruel and unlawful, saying it is an effort to blow up the system. He also pledged to defend the subsidies in the court. Meanwhile, health insurance experts have warned that the administration's decision to end the federal payments would financially harm middle-class insurers. The reactions come a day after the Trump administration said it would stop paying billions of dollars worth of reimbursements to health insurers. The subsidies are a key provision of Obamacare that helps millions of low-income Americans pay medical expenses. Repealing and replacing the Obamacare has been a long campaign of Trump and the Republican Party.

Mogadishu blast

Two huge car bomb blasts rip through separate parts of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, killing at least 22 people and injuring dozens more. The first explosion took place in the city center, an area lined with government offices and other resorts. Somalia's police say several buildings were destroyed. Police added that the death toll is likely to rise as several bodies have reportedly been trapped under the rubble. There were no suspects, but the al-Shabab militant group, which carries out regular attacks in the region, was likely behind it. About two hours later, another blast took place in the city's Madina district, killing two civilians. Police said a man was arrested in connection with the second explosion.
