Backing the Iran deal

The British prime minister has called on the US president to remain committed to the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement. In a telephone conversation with Donald Trump, Theresa May also reaffirmed UK’s strong commitment to the deal alongside other European signatories, stressing that it was important that the deal was carefully monitored and properly enforced. Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany signed the nuclear accord, known as the JCPOA, in July 2015 and started implementing it in January 2016. According to US officials, Trump is expected to “decertify” the deal, describing it as the worst agreement ever negotiated.

US travel ban

The US state of Hawaii is seeking a nationwide order against the implementation of the latest version of the travel ban introduced by the US president. According to court documents, lawyers representing Hawaii say the updated restrictions are a continuation of Trump’s promise to exclude Muslims from the US. The documents state that the addition of non-Muslim countries to the latest version of the ban is almost entirely symbolic. In September, President Donald Trump updated his highly controversial travel ban, targeting eight countries including non-Muslim countries of North Korea and Venezuela. An earlier version of the ban had been challenged by the state of Maryland on the grounds that it violated the US constitution for targeting Muslims. The challenge to that order, which expired last month, was thrown out by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Iran vows response to any non-compliance with JCPOA

Iran’s ambassador to the UN says any non-compliance with the Iran nuclear deal by other signatories will definitely meet Tehran’s proportionate response. Gholamali Khoshroo made the announcement while addressing the UN's Disarmament and International Security Committee. He reiterated that Iran has kept its side of the bargain under the agreement as confirmed by reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency. He said Iran will remain committed to its obligations under the deal as long as it can reap the benefits of the agreement. He noted that the other parties to the deal should live up to their obligations as well. The top diplomat expressed regret over the nuclear weapons states renovating their nukes. He said such moves are an obstacle to the realization of the idea of having a nuclear-free world and will rather negatively impact international peace and security.

Catalonia independence

Spain’s government will hold crisis talks later on Wednesday after Catalan authorities signed a suspended declaration of independence. The emergency cabinet meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. It also comes after Catalonia called for talks with Madrid over its independence drive. On Tuesday, Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont announced Catalonia’s independence, but suspended it to allow for mediation. The announcement followed a referendum earlier this month, in which Catalans said yes to secession from Spain. The central government in Madrid rejects the independence drive.

Paris clashes

Police have clashed with civil servants who took to the streets of the French capital to protest President Emanuel Macron’s economic policies. Several people were injured as police used tear gas and batons to push back the protesters. Police forces beat some protesters before wrestling them to the ground while others dispersed the crowd. Several demonstrators were detained on charges of carrying weapons. The protest was part of a nationwide strike fueled by government's plans to tighten rules for sick leaves, freeze salaries and eliminate 120,000 public jobs.

Trump vs. Tillerson

US President Donald Trump has challenged his Secretary of State to an IQ test amid reports that Rex Tillerson had referred to him as a “moron”. In an interview with Forbes magazine, Trump dismissed reports of Tillerson’s insult as fake news. He, however, said that an IQ comparison will show that he's more intelligent than his foreign policy chief in case there's truth to the story. Recently, media have been saying that Tillerson was on the verge of resignation due to differences of opinion with the president. Both Trump and Tillerson deny such reports. Despite that, major divergence has been seen between the two politicians on some crucial foreign policy issues.

Defeating Daesh in Iraq

The Iraqi Prime Minister says he expects Daesh to be completely defeated in the country by the end of the year. Haider al-Abadi made the remark during his weekly press conference in Baghdad. He stressed Baghdad will not sit idly by vis-à-vis the attempts to divide the country, in reference to the controversial Kurdish secession referendum. In July Iraqi forces liberated Mosul the capital of the Takfiri group's so called caliphate. Daesh has maintained only a stretch of territory along the Syrian border since government troops retook Hawijah and surrounding areas last week.

California wildfire

The death toll from raging wildfires in the US state of California has risen to seventeen. California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says taking advantage of cooler temperatures, lower winds and coastal fog the blaze has been contained forty percent. Evacuation orders across several counties in Northern California have been lifted as firefighters make headway. The flames from seventeen major blazes in the region have left at least 180 people injured, about 150 missing and destroyed 1,500 homes and other structures. The fires forced tens of thousands of residents to flee, closed schools and at least two hospitals and damaged a hotel. State officials have called on the White House to speed up federal aid to the affected areas.
