Two US soldiers killed, 6 injured in 'accident' at South Carolina army base
US military authorities have announced the killing of two soldiers and wounding of six others during “an accident” in a South Carolina army base, where they were struck by a military vehicle while in formation.
Officials at Fort Jackson military installation further noted in a Saturday statement that two of the injured servicemen in the Friday afternoon incident – all of whom were transferred to an off-base medical center near the city of Columbia -- remained in critical condition.
While the statement described the deadly incident as a "tragic accident," it did not elaborate on where and how it occurred or the type of vehicle involved.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the soldiers we lost today and to the families of the injured, they represent the best of our nation and we will endeavor to support all those affected through this difficult time," US Army Training Center and Fort Jackson Commander Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson said in a separate statement.
Fort Jackson is the US army's largest and most active initial entry military training camp, with more than 50,000 recruits assigned there per year. It trains 50 percent of all US soldiers and 60 percent of female service members entering the army each year.
According to the latest reports, those killed in the incident have been identified as Pvt. Ethan Shrader of Prospect, Tennessee, and Pvt. Timothy Ashcraft of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The injured were also identified as Pvt. Hannah New of Cartersville, Georgia; Pvt. Benjamin Key of Livingston, Tennessee; Pvt. Alan Kryszak of Clarksville, Tennessee; Pvt. Cardre Jackson Jr. of Laurel, Maryland; and Pvt. James Foster of Macon, Georgia.
