Turin bomb scare
Hundreds of people have been injured in the Italian city of Turin after a bomb scare caused a panic movement in a crowd of soccer enthusiasts.
Italian sources say at least four hundred Juventus fans have sustained injuries after the stampede in one of the city’s main squares. However, only two people are told to be seriously hurt. Thousands of Italians had crammed into San Carlo piazza to watch their team take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday night prior to the incident. Some eyewitnesses say the panic was caused by the explosion of a loud firecracker that was mistaken for a bomb. But later reports suggest it was all a false alarm. Police are now investigating the cause of the mayhem.
Slamming US "irresponsibility"
Along with world leaders, Iranian officials have also heaped scorn on the United States over its withdrawal from Paris Climate Accord.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi says the US pullout shows the country’s irresponsibility. Qassemi has noted that climate change has caused big global crises whose resolution hinges on complete and sincere cooperation of all countries particularly industrial ones. Iran’s head of Environmental Protection Organization, Masoumeh Ebtekar has also slammed Washington’s decision, saying the deal is non-negotiable. Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s move, Indian Prime Minister said his country would go above and beyond the deal to combat climate change.
Leaked emails reveal plot
A series of leaked emails belonging to the Emirati ambassador to the US reveals high-level backchannel cooperation between a pro-Israeli think tank and the UAE against Iran.
According to online news publication the Intercept, Emirati envoy, Yousef al-Otaiba, has established a growing correspondence with Israeli group, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, FDD. Hacked emails reveal that the two have been collaborating to find ways to hamper Iran’s ability to engage in business activities with major international companies. The correspondence between Otaiba and the FDD covers a range of other topics related to Iran, including how the UAE and Saudi Arabia could pressure President Trump to adopt a more hawkish line on Iran. The Israeli think tank is known for its influence in the U-S. It belongs to Sheldon Adelson, one of the largest political donors in the US and a close friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Caracas clashes
Months-long political deadlock shows no signs of abating in Venezuela where police and anti-government protesters continue to clash.
Venezuela’s National Guard troops were deployed to the capital Caracas to quell the demonstrators. They used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protesters. The demonstrators were calling for fresh elections to oust President Nicolas Maduro. The Latin American country has been struggling with food shortages and a staggering inflation. President Maduro blames the US for the bad situation, saying foreign countries are seeking to weaken Venezuela. More than 60 people have been killed in two months of protests for and against the government.
"March for truth"
Nationwide protests have swept the United States with demonstrators taking to the streets to express their anger at President Donald Trump and his administration.
The so-called ‘March for Truth’ rallies took place in major cities such as Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Austin and Chicago. The protesters carried anti-Trump signs and chanted slogans against his policies. They called Trump a liar and demanded a fresh probe into his alleged connections to Russians as well as Moscow’s alleged interference in last year’s presidential election. They also condemned Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.
