Powerful tornadoes have swept through East Texas, leaving at least five people dead and dozens of others injured.

The storms struck Canton, Eustace and Caney City Saturday afternoon and evening, damaging homes, trees and other structures, officials said.

Tornadoes overturned dozens of vehicles on Interstate 20, east of Canton, according to NBC.

According to Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett, four of the victims died in Van Zandt County and another one was killed in Canton itself.

"We won't know what exactly we are dealing with until the sun comes up," Everett said. "We have no power. We have three major transmission stations that are damaged."

Some 50 people were taken to hospitals, with one of them in critical condition, East Texas Medical Center reported.

Canton resident Desirae Rasmussen survived the storm, but her home received serious damage.

"Every last one of us walked away. But we have nothing left down there," Rasmussen told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

"We were all sitting in the hallway and the roof collapsed on us. By the time it was all over, we went outside. We had a three level house, and we're down to the last level and half of that roof is gone," she said.

In addition to Texas, other parts of the South and Midwest were hit by storm on Saturday, with officials issuing flash flood warnings for an area stretching from eastern Oklahoma to western Kentucky and parts of Illinois.

"We're having major flooding like I've never seen since I've been here in town," said Mayor Ben Baker in Neosho, Missouri.
