'Trump should engage in real politics than tweet'

Political tensions have once again escalated in the United States, owing to the latest provocative tweet by President Donald Trump. The president has alleged that his predecessor Barack Obama illegally intercepted his communications at Trump Tower in New York City during the election campaigns in 2016. Obama and the FBI  have both outright rejected Trump’s wiretapping claims.

Commenting on the controversy, Michael Springmann, a former US diplomat in Germany, told Press TV, “President [Trump] has better things than tweet hour after hour and day after day... a lot of which do not make sense.”

Trump “should focus his energies on doing things a bit more substantive like closing down Guantanamo Bay, doing something about Israel’s nuclear weapons, doing something about better relations with Iran and doing something with Palestine,” Springmann said.

By spending his time on tweeting messages, the president “gives ammunition to his critics who say he does not know what he is doing and he does not focus on reality,” the analyst noted.

President Trump and his supporters “do not seem to focus on reality,” he said, adding they really need to do something about domestic and foreign policy issues.

The analyst is of the opinion that the tensions between US Democratic and Republican leaders on the one hand and their supporters on the other have tarnished America’s image in the eyes of the world.

America’s internal divide is “a big stain and it makes people wonder about the United States and the leadership of this country that claims to be the only remaining superpower,” he noted.

There are numerous international problems that the United States has triggered, such as wars and instability in the Middle East and North Africa, but the new president is only busy with his tweets, he exclaimed.

International observers see the US politics as going in the “wrong direction” rather than focusing on realities and issues that need to be tackled for the world peace and security, the former diplomat concluded.

Trump has raised controversial issues such as imposing an entry ban on Muslims and building a wall on Mexico’s border, causing rifts among American politicians and drawing condemnations from across the globe.
