Anti-Trump protests in US, absolutely justified: Activist
Protests against US President-elect Donald Trump have erupted near Trump Tower in New York and in several other US cities. The mass demonstrations began after Trump clobbered his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's presidential election.
A writer and activist believes the widespread protests that are taking place throughout the United States are “absolutely justified”, adding that they are not going to end.
“People of color and women are out, Muslims and Arabs are out, immigrants are out in the streets, the LGBTQ community is in the streets and their white allies are in the streets and this is not going to end. I think the important thing for people to recognize right now is that this is just the beginning,” Vincent Emanuele told Press TV.
He also stated these protests which are “symbolic” for now will be the model for the next four years undoubtedly.
The activist also argued people need to be more “sophisticated” and “shift” their strategies and tactics according to the reality that the new President-elect is Donald Trump.
“I think part of that is not just protesting in the streets, not just these symbolic actions and this is just the beginning but to be more sophisticated, to create institutions and organizations that we can build on way past the four or eight years that Donald Trump is in office,” he said.
Emanuele also mentioned the people who are in the streets protesting against Donald Trump are also opposing larger systems and institutions in the country.
He went on to say that supporters of Donald Trump are going to become “increasingly violent” as he fails to fulfill all of his promises, suggesting that activists and progressives need to be prepared for that.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the activist noted people have to always be “vigilant, critical, and principled” regardless of who is the President of the United States.
“Whoever that is, if they commit war crimes, if they are drone striking innocent people, if they are supporting the state of Israel, if they are supporting oppressive regimes aboard, we should oppose them,” he opined.
Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favored Clinton, sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
His election campaign had been marred by his disparaging remarks against minorities in the US.
