Police in New York City have gunned down an armed man suspected of killing one officer and injuring another one in an ambush, the New York Police Department (NYPD) says.

The shootout broke out in the Bronx neighborhood on Friday, after a heavily-armed gunman carrying multiple guns opened fire on the officers who were sitting in their patrol car at around 3 pm local time.

The man was fleeing the scene of a house robbery when he was confronted by the cops, who rammed into his vehicle.

The two injured cops were rushed to the hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead after being shot in the head. The other officer was shot in the leg and would survive.

The robbery victim had reported that the assailant, identified as Manuel Rosales, was driving a red SUV.

The ambush-style attack took place after two police officers were fatally shot in similar attacks near Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday.

The officers were sitting in their squad cars when they were shot and killed. The suspect turned himself in later on.

A surge in deliberate attacks on police officers across the US indicates that there are growing anti-police sentiments over the officers’ use of violence against civilians, African Americans in particular.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page organization, 50 police officers have died by gunfire in America so far this year.

Of those, 14 were killed in ambush-style attacks between January and the end of July. Such attacks have seen a 300-percent increase from 2015, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Earlier this year, five officers in Dallas, Texas, and three officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, were fatally shot after police killed two black men in separate incidents.

The US police killed over 1,150 people last year, with at least 321 of them being African Americans, according to data compiled by an activist group that runs the Mapping Police Violence project.
