US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has slammed Democratic rival Hillary Clinton over her immigration policy, saying she could “triple the size” of American population in a week.

Trump raised eyebrows at a rally on Sunday when he said that hundreds of millions of people could enter the United States under a Clinton presidency.

Clinton “wants to let people just pour in,” Trump warned his supporters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which has a fairly long border with Mexico.

"You could have 650 million people pour in and we'd do nothing about it. Think of it. That's what could happen. You triple the size of our country in one week. Once you lose control of your borders you just have no country folks, you have no country," he said.

Trump has vowed to show "no amnesty" for undocumented migrants living in the country and promised to build an "impenetrable" wall on the US-Mexican border if elected president.

Approximately 11.3 million undocumented immigrants were living in the US in 2014 and undocumented immigrants from Mexico made up the largest share of this population, according to government data.

Trump’s campaign has been marked by controversy from the beginning, including disparaging remarks about women, Mexican immigrants and Muslims.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” Trump said at his campaign kickoff speech in June 2015.

“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. But I speak to border guards, and they tell us what we’re getting,” he said.
