Russia has warned about the possibility that the Daesh Takfiri terrorists could flee the city of Mosul in northern Iraq and join their fellow militants in Syria.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Moscow could take “political and military” decisions if the terrorists are granted a safe passage from Mosul into Syria.
In an interview with Press TV, Ibrahim Mousawi, a political commentator from Beirut, said Moscow had taken a “very clear and strong position.”
“The Russians know very well who they are fighting, know very well what they should be doing, and know what kind of respect the Americans pay for their agreements, that’s why he (Lavrov) is highlighting the necessity to take all political and military measures in order to get rid of the Takfiri groups,” Mousawi said, referring to agreements between Moscow and Washington on the battle against the terrorists.
The analyst said that if the Takfiri militants fled Mosul for Syria, the bloodshed would transfer from one place to another.
“It is very important from the Russian side to highlight its position from the very beginning” that the Americans could not get in the way of the Russian war on terrorism, he said.
Based on the facts and figures on the ground, it is obvious that the US and its regional allies support the Takfiri groups and resort to any tactics to save the lives of the terrorists including providing them with a safe passage from Iraq to eastern Syria, Mousawi said.
Iraqi government troops together with Sunni fighters and Shia forces from the Popular Mobilization Units as well as Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are involved in a mass offensive to liberate Mosul, the last major Daesh stronghold in Iraq.
