Iran president arrives in Cuba on way to New York
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has arrived in Havana to hold talks with senior Cuban officials.
Heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, Rouhani arrived at Havana Jose Marti International Airport on Monday at the official invitation of his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro.
Senior Iranian and Cuban authorities are expected to discuss ways to improve relations.
Ahead of Cuba’s trip, the Iranian president delivered a speech at the 17th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on the Venezuelan island of Margarita on Saturday. Rouhani handed over the movement’s rotating presidency to his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the summit on Saturday, the Iranian president called for further cooperation among the NAM member states, saying the bloc plays an “undeniable” role in resolving the crises across the world.
The Iranian president also held talks with senior officials attending the NAM summit about leading regional and international developments.
At the final stage of the trip, Rouhani will travel to New York to deliver a speech at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He plans to meet world political and religious leaders and speak to media in New York.
