- World leaders, including Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, have expressed their condolences on the Uzbek president’s death. Islam Karimov died after he had a stroke at the age of 78 on Friday. The Uzbek government says Karimov will be buried in the city of Samarkand on Saturday.
- Yemeni forces have launched a retaliatory rocket attack on Saudi Arabia with a domestically-built ballistic missile. The missile targeted a military position in Ta'if in the southeastern province of Mecca. Yemeni troops say the attacks are in retaliation for the ongoing Saudi airstrikes.
- More than 300 people, including 62 gunmen living in the militant-held suburb of Moadamiyeh close to the Syrian capital, Damascus, are being evacuated. This comes in the wake of a deal struck with the government last week that grants amnesty to militants. They will be sheltered in a government-controlled neighborhood nearby.
- Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has failed to win the confidence vote of Spain’s parliament for the second time. 180 lawmakers voted against Rajoy while 170 others voted in favor of him. The vote has started the countdown to a possible third election if a deal can't be brokered in the next two months.
- South Korean multinational company, Samsung, has recalled its newly-released Galaxy Note 7 smart phones, except for those in China, over exploding battery. The recall comes weeks after the company launched its latest premium phone. Up to 35 incidents of the phone igniting while being charged were reported by customers.
Twelve people have been killed and at least sixty others wounded in an explosion at a packed night market in the city of Davao in the Philippines. The blast took place in the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte who was in the city at the time of blast.
Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich says the expansion of US-sanctions against Russia is unlikely to significantly affect the country’s economy. Washington expanded its punitive measures against Moscow for its alleged involvement in the crisis in eastern Ukraine. Russia has said such moves will not change its stance on Ukraine.
At least 15 people have been killed and over 50 others were wounded in multiple explosions in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. Five people died after a fire triggered an explosion at a weapons depot in an eastern district of the city. Four bomb attacks also hit other parts of Baghdad, claiming ten lives.
