Donald J. Trump has formally been announced as the nominee of the Republican Party in the US 2016 presidential election.

His son, Donald Trump Jr., cast the final votes his father needed to win the nomination on the second day of the Republican National Convention at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday.

"It's my honor to be able to throw Donald Trump over the top in the delegation count tonight," his son said.

The real estate mogul and reality TV star is set to formally accept the nomination during a speech at the convention on Thursday.

"It's unbelievable. It's surreal. I'm so proud of my father. I'm so proud. We all are," Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka, told CNN, describing her father as an outsider to the American establishment. "It's amazing. He's the ultimate outsider and he did it. We are so proud of him."

New York totally cast 95 votes, 89 for Trump and six for Ohio Governor John Kasich.

On the first day of the convention, attempts to disrupt the nomination process failed and on Tuesday the New York billionaire was officially announced as the nominee with little drama.

The real estate tycoon will now have to face his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, to win the white House in a national vote in November.
