Iranian Foreign Ministry has denounced a bloody terrorist attack in Kazakhstan, urging all regional countries to collectively combat the ominous phenomenon.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns such terrorist and inhuman acts in the Kazakh city of Almaty,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said on Tuesday.

He expressed concern over the increase in terrorist acts in Iran’s neighboring states and said all countries in the region must make collective efforts to fight terrorism.

“Terror and violence are reprehensible and unacceptable in any form, anywhere and at any time,” Qasemi said.

At least six people, including four police officers, lost their lives in an armed attack by a group of unidentified gunmen against a police station and security building in Kazakhstan’s financial capital city of Almaty on Monday.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev branded the attack as an "act of terror" but the motives behind the attack remain unclear.

At least one attacker has been detained by police, while another is still at large.

Kazakh interior minister said the suspect, Ruslan Kulikbayev, had admitted that he "attempted first and foremost to kill judges and officials of the prosecutor's office" before deciding to kill police officers.

It was the second bloody assault to hit Kazakhstan in recent months.

On June 5, at least 19 people lost their lives in an attack by unknown gunmen in the northwestern Kazakh city of Aktobe. Kazakh police spokesman Almas Sadubayev said the death toll included 13 assailants, three civilians and three National Guard servicemen. Eight gunmen were also detained.
