Fourteen teenagers in the US state of California have been injured as three armed young men open fire at a crowd of 150 teenagers at a house party, police says.
The early Saturday morning incident was described by authorities and witnesses as a drive-by shooting in the city of Bakersfield, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, in which the three youths, who had reportedly been asked to leave the place earlier, returned with firearms and started shooting at party participants.
Kern County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ray Pruitt said the shooting took place around 1 am, when three African American teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 drove by, began shooting at the teenage party and then fled the scene with their vehicle.
Pruitt said police has made no arrests in the case and that authorities do not have a description of the escape vehicle, facing difficulty in their efforts to get victims and witnesses identify the shooters.
According to the official, since the party was announced on social media, many uninvited guests attended, causing more participants than anticipated.
“At some point, people who were not invited showed up,” Pruitt said, adding that the party swelled to at least 150 revelers and “at some point, it got out of control.”
Authorities also believe a verbal confrontation broke out between two suspected gang groups in the backyard of the house and several people, including the shooters, were told to leave the party.
“They did leave, and we believe it was those individuals who left the party that came back and opened fire on the crowd,” Pruitt said, adding that investigators believed the shooting was gang-related.
Police officials also said at least one person in the crowd returned fire at the suspects, who absconded later.
Police are considering filing charges against parents of the teenager who threw the party since they believe they allowed juveniles to attend a gathering, in which alcohol was being served.
