Obama divided America more than ever: US rep.
US President Barack Obama has repeatedly failed to bring Americans together after several deadly mass shootings in the country similar to the one that killed a number of police officers in Dallas, Texas, says a Republican lawmaker.
US Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas made the remarks on Friday, a day after five police officers were killed and seven more were injured.
The gunman was enraged by the police killings of two unarmed black men last week, whose death once again fueled the debates over police brutality against African American communities.
After the shooting, Obama mainly settled to calling for tighter gun control laws. He also slipped in a subtle jab at police by saying “the data shows that black folks are more vulnerable to these kinds of incidents.”
“He has divided us more than ever,” Gohmert told. Fox Business Network. "Every time there’s been a tragic shooting by police, he has taken the chance to call out police."
The lawmaker said Obama’s support of Black Lives Matter, a national movement against police brutality and injustice, has deepened the division among American people.
“He always comes out against the cops. This administration has supported Black Lives Matter as even their leaders have called out for killing cops. The president has failed miserably as he’s been so divisive,” the representative said.
"They don’t even know who all the suspects were. And yet he’s calling out guns instead of trying to bring us together as a nation? That’s just more divisive rhetoric,” he added.
Obama, who is in Warsaw to attend a NATO summit, will short his trip to Europe and travel to Dallas next week after being invited by the city's mayor over the shooting of officers, the White House said Friday.
The shooter, identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, had served as an Army reservist from March 2009 until April 2015.
