UEFA has threatened to disqualify Russia and England from the Euro 2016 due to violence during their opening match. UEFA expressed “disgust” at the scenes.

The violence has been widely shared in social media and represents the worst football violence since the 1998 World Cup. FIFA has also condemned English “idiotic troublemakers” for creating “shameful scenes.” It has been claimed the British provoked the Russians by singing “rude songs” about Russian sports people and politicians. The worsening violence also included Ukraine and Germany.

At this year’s tournament, English and Russian fans ripped international flags, chased passers-by and families, terrifying parents with their children.

French police have waged war on the hooligans with water cannon and tear gas.  And all against the backdrop of terror attacks in Paris, claiming over a hundred lives. Where does European football hooliganism come from? What image does British football violence give to the rest of the world?  And how can it stop?
