Lawrence Freeman, with the Executive Intelligence Review from Baltimore, was interviewed by Press TV about comments by US President Barack Obama on post-Gaddafi Libya.
A rough transcription of the interview follows.
Press TV: Tell us about your initial reaction to Obama’s comments of standing by the decision to intervene in Libya, but at the same time regretting not planning for the aftermath of Gaddafi.
Freeman: The president’s response is a complete fraud, because they had the plan that they carried out is the one they intended. This was a policy of regime change and they knew after the overthrow of Gaddafi, where they sent in troops... The overthrow of Gaddafi was designed to destroy the Libyan state and renew chaos and expand terrorism across the North Africa and the Sahel. After the experience in Iraq when they overthrew Saddam Hussein and destroyed the army, either President Obama is the stupidest president we ever had, or is most evil or both, because what happened in Libya was foreseeable and therefore that was the intention and that was also the intention of France under President Sarkozy and England under Cameron.
Press TV: What you’re basically saying here is that there was no lack of planning when it came to the aftermath of Muammar Gaddafi; that this was not a lapse in judgment or mistake by any of the world powers?
Freeman: Read the comments by Susan Rice, Samantha Powers, Obama, they made it appear as if there was going to be a military attack in Benghazi. In fact, Gaddafi was fighting al-Qaeda at the time and fighting the beginning of ISIS at the time and those are the people that he was trying to destroy, and there was a hopped-up charge of genocide and therefore we had to bring in the Western military strength, but this has nothing to do with reality.
The policy that we’ve been carrying out, the Western powers, since 1999 is the policy of regime change, first articulated by Tony Blair, and regime change in the entire region, regime change in Libya, regime change in Syria, regime change after Afghanistan and Iraq. And if Obama would be able to get his way, he wants to carry out regime change against President Putin in Russia. This is the way the dying West empire is trying to survive by overthrowing, destabilizing other governments.
And anybody, if they were honest, would know that the overthrow of Gaddafi would cause exactly what happened. So if they say they didn’t know, they were a lying fool and they did know, which means they’re evil.
Press TV: How does the US gain anything from a Libya that has descended into chaos, where it doesn’t even have a proper functioning government?
Freeman: Because the policy is not to have a government. The policy is the geo-political policy that we watched the British played for centuries. They don’t want to see stable governments. Gaddafi was a problem. He wanted to support certain types of economic development… Syria could have a policy potentially to develop that entire region of the [Persian] Gulf area in the Middle East… The world leaders of the West have no idea or concern for the future and they want to maintain their control. They’re being threatened now by Russia and they’re being threatened by Xi Jinping, the president of China, and his new Silk Road policy. And their response is to destroy, prevent other countries from developing and cause chaos.
This is an intentional policy to prevent countries from being nations and developing the kind of economic policies that would help them and their people to prosper.
