Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The United Nations and the European Union have stressed the urgency of a political solution in Syria in the wake of terrorist attacks in Belgium. UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said a political solution should be found in Syria to tackle terrorism.
  • The UN special envoy for Yemen says a nationwide ceasefire will start on April ten. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed added that a new round of peace talks is scheduled to be held in Kuwait on April 18. Previous negotiations had failed to produce any results.
  • Israel has closed the only operating crossing to the besieged Gaza Strip over a Jewish holiday that lasts for three days. Israel does so for over a hundred days with different excuses. During these times, people of Gaza experience even worse crises over limitation of goods and energy resources.
  • Rights groups in Hungary have slammed the government for what they described as its degrading treatment of asylum seekers and torturing victims fleeing war zones. A report released by refugee rights groups says the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban has failed to meet its obligations under EU law.
  • More aid agencies are boycotting the refugee camps in Greece, which they say are used as detention centers. The agencies are angered at an EU-Turkey deal that fast-tracks registration and asylum applications. Under the agreement, asylum seekers whose applications fail will be sent back to Turkey from Greece.
  • French mail workers have joined a nationwide strike over the government’s latest austerity-inspired proposals. This comes as the country enters its third week of major social discontent. Workers in multiple fields have recently walked off their jobs in opposition to one and a half year of ineffective right-wing economics.
  • People in the EU capital Brussels have observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the airport and metro bombings. The attacks on Tuesday left at least 34 people dead and 250 wounded. World leaders have condemned the carnage in Brussels and pleged to combat terrorism.
  • Thousands of junior doctors have walked off their jobs in Britain in a dispute over a new contract. They are unhappy with the payment and working conditions the new contract would provide. During the 48-hour strike, junior doctors will be providing only emergency medical care.
