In a surprise announcement, former US presidential candidate Jeb Bush has endorsed Ted Cruz’s White House bid, saying he represents the Republican Party's best chance of winning the 2016 election.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Bush called the Texas senator a “consistent, principled conservative” who has demonstrated an ability to win primary contests against Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.
"Washington is broken, and the only way Republicans can hope to win back the White House and put our nation on a better path is to support a nominee who can articulate how conservative policies will help people rise up and reach their full potential," Bush said.
The former Florida governor urged Republicans to “overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity [Donald Trump] has brought to the political arena” or risk losing the White House to Democrats.
“To win, Republicans need to make this election about proposing solutions to the many challenges we face, and I believe that we should vote for Ted as he will do just that,” he added.
Bush, brother and son to two former US presidents, dropped out after a disappointing showing in South Carolina's Republican primary on February 20.

Trump, who has been credited to ruin the candidacy of onetime party favorite Bush, has refused to take responsibility for his opponent’s exit from the 2016 White House race.
Trump, who won South Carolina's Republican primary election, denied any role he might have played in taking Bush down. "I just don't know what did him in."
The billionaire businessman had repeatedly attacked Bush throughout his campaign for the Republican nomination, calling him "weak," "low-energy" and "an embarrassment" to the Bush family.
Trump also targeted Jeb’s brother, George W. Bush, over Iraq war and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Bush’s endorsement comes as the Republican establishment scrambles to stop Trump from winning the nomination. It also follows Cruz’s victory over trump in Tuesday’s Utah caucuses.
In an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday night, Cruz described the endorsement as "tremendously important."
"Gov. Bush is a good man, and I'm very grateful for his endorsement," the Texas senator said.
