Twenty-two military personnel have died in a plane crash in Ecuador's Amazon region, says the country’s President Rafael Correa.

Nineteen soldiers, two pilots and one mechanic were on board the Israeli-built Arava plane that went down in the jungle region in the eastern Pastaza province on Tuesday.

"There are no survivors. Our embrace of solidarity to the families and the armed forces. It is a tragedy," said Correa via Twitter.

According to a statement released by the Ecuadorian military, the plane crashed while en route to a parachuting course.

The cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
