Press TV has conducted an interview with Kevin Barrett, an author and Middle East expert, and Michael Lane, the president of the American Institute for Foreign Policy, to discuss Iran’s parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections underway throughout the country.
Barrett describes the propaganda by Western politicians and media against the Guardian Council in Iran as a “superficial and misleading analysis” of the situation in the Islamic Republic. He also says the Guardian Council supervises whether or not candidates support the Islamic Republic.
Comparing the elections in Iran and the United States, he says, “We need a guardian council in the United States to make sure that every American candidate is passionately devoted to fulfilling their oath to the Constitution.”
Iran is being run in an “honest, transparent and constitutional manner” and the Guardian Council is a very important part of that, he says, therefore, the American authorities should understand that if the US wants to be supportive of democratic republics, Iran should be its number one ally in the Middle East.
Lane, for his part, believes the fact that Iran holds elections to allow people decide their future shows the country is “steps above many of its neighbors.”
