Iranian weightlifter Rahman shines in IPC World Cup

Iranian Paralympic weightlifter Siamand Rahman has exhibited an impressive display of strength and prowess at the seventh edition of Fazza International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, collecting a gold medal and setting a new record at the high-status sporting event.

On Friday, the 27-year-old competed in the men’s over 170-kilogram weight category at Dubai Club For The Disabled, and managed to lift 296 kilograms to set a new world record in the class.

Egyptian athlete Amr Mosaad earned the silver with a lift of 226 kilograms, and Jamil el-Shelbi from Jordan elevated 220 kilograms to settle for the bronze medal.

The seventh edition of Fazza IPC Powerlifting World Cup began in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on February 15 and finished on February 19, 2016.

More than 200 athletes from 40 countries, including Algeria, Azerbaijan, Britain, Egypt, Iran, Ivory Coast, Japan, Morocco, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, participated in the tournament.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Sport Federation for The Disabled dispatched a seven-strong delegation to the event.

Hamzeh Mohammadi was in action in minus 65-kilogram, Majid Farzin in minus 80-kilogram, Hamed Solhipour in minus 88-kilogram, Saman Razi in minus 97-kilogram, Mansour Pourmirzaei and Ali Sadeghzadeh in minus 107-kilogram, and Siamand Rahman in over 107-kilogram weight categories.

Farzin in the men’s up to 80 kilograms and Solhipour in the men’s up to 88 kilograms claimed two gold medals for Iran. 

Razi and Sadeghzadeh snatched two silver medals in the men’s up to 97 kilograms and up to 107 kilograms. Hamzeh Mohammadi won a bronze medal in the men’s up to 65 kilograms.

Egypt topped the medal count table with a total of 16 (ten golds, four silvers and two bronzes). Iran stood second with six (three golds, two silvers and one bronze). Ukraine snatched nine medals (two golds, four silver and three bronzes) to occupy the third spot.
